CredentialsGenuine patientrelationships
My choice to pursue a career in behavioral health stems from my enduring fascination with the intricate connection between mental and physical well-being. I strongly believe in taking a holistic approach to patient care, recognizing the interconnectedness of clients’ physical and mental states rather than addressing them in isolation.
In therapy, I aim to cultivate a nurturing, genuine, and collaborative bond with my clients. Together, we embark on a journey to achieve your goals, enriching your overall functioning and contentment in life. I employ a diverse range of innovative therapeutic techniques and provide assessments of personality and functioning to pinpoint areas of focus and concern.
As a registered psychologist in Oregon, I bring over 15 years of experience in supporting and evaluating adults facing various mental health challenges. In 2002, I worked closely with individuals living with HIV/AIDS, providing comprehensive care including assessment, counseling, and coping skill development. Later, in 2007, I served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University Medical School, offering specialized assistance to a diverse group recovering from serious injuries.
Additionally, I have provided compassionate individual and family palliative care to those with terminal illnesses, and as a former Director of Primary Care-Based Clinics, I have conducted psychotherapy and assessments for a wide range of medical and psychiatric concerns.
In my current research endeavors, I’m dedicated to exploring the intricate nuances of gender identity and its profound impact on individuals’ health-related behaviors and adjustment to illness. Delving into this fascinating area, I have authored studies shedding light on how masculine and feminine identities influence people’s inclinations towards risky activities and their adoption of positive cardiac-related health behaviors.
For instance, I have conducted research elucidating the correlation between gender identity and individuals’ likelihood of engaging in risky behaviors, providing valuable insights into the factors influencing health decisions. Additionally, my studies delve into the challenges men face in adjusting to significant health conditions such as prostate cancer and spinal cord injury, aiming to foster a deeper understanding of their unique experiences and needs.
The culmination of my research efforts has led to the publication of numerous articles in esteemed journals including the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, Rehabilitation Psychology, the American Journal of Men’s Health, and Psychology of Men and Masculinity. Through my contributions to these publications, I strive to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge in the field, ultimately aiming to improve the health and well-being of individuals across diverse communities.
In 2007, I reached a pivotal moment in my academic journey as I proudly received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. This achievement marked the culmination of years of dedication and passion for understanding the human mind and its complexities. Prior to this significant milestone, I laid the foundation for my academic pursuits by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Counseling from the University of Texas at San Antonio. It was during this time that I honed my skills and deepened my understanding of counseling practices, preparing me for the rigorous doctoral program that awaited me.
Before delving into the realm of counseling psychology, I embarked on my academic journey at the University of Iowa, where I pursued undergraduate studies in psychology and Spanish. This interdisciplinary approach allowed me to explore the intricacies of human behavior while also immersing myself in the rich culture and language of Spanish-speaking communities. Each step of my academic journey has contributed to shaping my holistic understanding of mental health and counseling practices, laying the groundwork for my commitment to serving individuals with compassion and expertise.
Throughout my career, I have had the honor of serving as an educator, guiding students through a diverse array of undergraduate and graduate-level courses. From counseling skills to research methods, interpersonal relations, and human development, each class has provided a unique opportunity to impart knowledge and foster growth. It’s been immensely fulfilling to witness the curiosity and enthusiasm of my students as they engage with the material and embark on their own academic journeys.
In recognition of my dedication to teaching excellence, I was humbled to receive the Donald J. White Teaching Excellence Award in 2005, the highest honor bestowed upon educators at Boston College. This award serves as a testament to my commitment to fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment where students can thrive academically and personally. As I continue my journey as an educator, I remain deeply passionate about empowering the next generation of scholars and leaders to reach their full potential.
Community involvement is a central aspect of my practice, reflecting my commitment to local mental health initiatives. Through active participation in various events and partnerships with community organizations, I work tirelessly to support and uplift individuals in need. This dedication underscores my belief in the importance of giving back to the community and fostering a supportive environment for mental well-being.
At the core of my therapeutic approach lies compassion and empathy. I strive to create a safe and inclusive space where clients feel valued and understood. By prioritizing genuine connections and understanding, I empower individuals to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and confidence. Through community service and a compassionate mindset, I endeavor to not only provide therapy but also to be a source of support and encouragement for those I serve.
